France 12-16 Dear Mother, Still going strong.  It is hard luck not being allowed to tell you where I am but the Heads know best, I suppose.  I am in the best of health and still gaining weight.  This life suits me so far.  I would like to be able to describe places and things to you that we see on our travels but that will have to keep till we get back.  I sincerely hope that all at home is well. Love, Sonny.

France 14-12-16 Dear Kate, Still well and going strong.  Trust that Mother and the rest are keeping fit.  I am sorry that I cannot tell you where we are and the rest of it.  That will have to wait until I get home again. Love, Sonny.

(Undated) 1889  L/Cpl. E.J. Dwyer France Dear Kate, Still in the best of nick and humour.  Have just had a big mail and am glad that all at home is well and Bill starting to talk.  Sorry that Mother got scared when she heard that there was a cable.  That is why I did not cable from Egypt.  I am sorry that I could not get cards like this for Mother and Daisy, also Mary but may get them later.  I think that I can safely say that I am going to have a lively, if not happy Xmas.  So far I have lost no weight or condition and don’t feel sorry that I came.  I cannot say much.  One has to be very careful and with good reason.  All I can say is that we are billeted in France and you don’t know what cold is in Australia.  And if it were not for my fingers when the gloves are off, I really enjoy it. Sonny.

France 24-12-16 Dear Mother, Hope that all is well with you.  I am in the best of health and don’t appear to be getting any worse.  I have not had a letter from you for some time.  I have had letters from Kate and the others.  Hope that there is nothing the matter with you. Love, Sonny.

1.These cards tell more than I can.

2.When I last saw it there were very few whole panes in the windows, though it was otherwise uninjured.  And the chapel is very pretty and the sisters very good to us.  I sincerely hope that it is no worse now.

3. As it was when I last saw it.  God knows what it is like now.  Note the Aussie in front.
